i’m looking at getting a slr and a compact

i’m in college so i’d be using the slr for that, landscapes, portraits, etc. bit of everything really.
nikon or canon? and which one?
under £450-ish if possible.
i’m looking at the canon eos 450d, canon 40d and nikon d60 at the moment, however i’m not sure.

and i’d like a nikon coolpix for when i’m out with my friends and at gigs,
are they good for gigs? and again, which one is best?
under £250-ish if possible.
looking at the s710, again not sure though.

Second-hand Nikon D80,
24-135mm for everyday shooting
1.8f 50mm lens for incredible depth of field.

Canon G 9 for gigs and suchlike. Massive screen, completely manual if you want to use it like that.

Hi guys, i really need your help in which camera is better, i need to purchase it buy the end of the week however i really cant decide. both seem to suit my needs, and the canon one seems to be the better option as it has video recording too? however ive heard nikon is a much better camera brand! im really stuck so can someone with experience in this area please please please help me! xxx poppy

Both Canon and Nikon make excellent cameras. There is a price and specification difference between the two models you list, a closer match would be the Rebel XS / 1000D, in price and specification.

The T2i / 550D has almost double the resoltion, a better AF system, depth of field preview and a video mode that betters than in any of Nikons DSLRs. A better match for the T2i in terms of cost and specificiation would be the Nikon D90.

I am a very satisfied Canon user (XTi & 7D) and can wholeheartedly recommend their cameras, lenses and system accessories.

However it is you who is using the camera, not me. Go into a shop and try each in the hand, look at the screen, and try the menus. That is probably going to determine your choice rather than dry stats.

Exactly…. The difference is in the lens. One is with VR (the expensive one) and the other one without.

Its awesome. to be fair be fair if your spending that much on a digital camera you’ll get a good one. Have a look at the sony aswell.

It really depends on the individual camera model. But generally I think that Nikon is more powerful and can do more however its a bit more complicated to use, whereas Canon are alot more user friendly.
