The low light performance of any compact is poor compared to any DSLR due to the small sensor.

This is a great DSLR deal if your in the UK, very reliable supplier.

http://www.srsmicrosystems.co.uk/2043/Pentax-K100D-Super-Digital-SLR-Camera-Body---Pentax-18-55mm-lens.html

Its one generation back hence the price, much higher spec than the Nikon D40 or D60.

I have a Canon A630, 8 mpixel. The beauty of this is it has a flip screen (like my first Sony) which can be set in the normal position or rotated to multi positions so that you can hold it above your head and see what you're taking or take candid pictures sideways, round corners, or even take your own portrait. The zoom works well, even the digital zoom, and you can zoom the review with reasonable clarity. Frame proportions are 4:3 or 16:9 for landscapes. It's bulkier than the compact cameras, but lighter than SLRs. Takes videos too.
I've had some great results with it.

You really want to do your research on the lenses available through Canon and Nikon, and make your decision based on that. Once you buy a camera, you'll need to start accumulating lenses. If you ever decide to upgrade from the camera body you decide on, you'll want to get a newer body in the same brand, as the lenses are not interchangable between brands.

If you know what you're doing, I'd say go with a Canon 40D or a Nikon D80 (or the newer D90). However, if you're new to DSLR's, I'd stick with something closer to a Canon 450D or a Nikon D60. Both of those, as well as the the older entry level DSLR's will have excellent image quality and full manual and automatic settings. Then you will want to start investing in good lenses. If you start out with a fancy camera with a lousy lens, you won't get images that are any sharper than an entry level camera with a lousy lens.

In the DSLR budget, here is a good start on your camera system you will be building for the next decades.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-Digital-Camera-18-55mm-Cleaning/dp/6111481266

What would I do? I would spend less on the camera body and invest in more lenses.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-D40-Digital-SLR-Camera/dp/B000KIX65S

Since I use my Nikon DSLR for gigs, I don't have an opinion on P&S cameras.

As a Nikon owner (although mine is a D40) I'm biased towards the D3000. Nikon and Canon are both excellent camera brands, so I'm sure whichever you get will work perfectly well.

In my opinion though, go Nikon!

Both the camera are excellent if you want a video feature than I would recommend you buying Canon EOS 550D Digital SLR Camera
# DIGIC 4 processor with ISO 100-6400 (Expansion to 12800)
# Continuous shooting at 3.7fps
# Full HD movie recording with manual control and selectable frame rates

Nikon D3000 can not be compared with Canon 550D. You may compare Nikon D5000 with Canon 550D. Nikon D5000 is updated and improved version of Nikon D3000. It is hard to say which is better - Nikon D5000 or Canon 550D.

You may try Nikon D90, which I seem, is far better than Canon 550D.

I own a Canon SLR and the Rebel line is an excellent make of camera. You're going to get conflicting views based on personal experience and brand loyalty.

The Canon people have been doing this for a very, very long time. Nikon has been playing catch up in digital cameras until they're almost where Canon is but still not quite.

To me Nikon pushes their colors too hard. Some say they're brilliant. That may be true but I'd rather
see what was actually there instead of someone else's idea of what they think I should like. Canon gives me that - true colors. If I want to edit I can but if I want to leave my photos as they were shot the color will be true.

Also to bring these cameras to their full potential you need to think optics - lenses. I own and recommend this lens for Canon.

This lens is fast, sharp and accurate. This package is about $1,000 but I get results like this.

It does seem pointless I feel to review this camera, as if you have got this far you've already read oodles of reviews in all the magazines and they will have said how fantastic this camera is. BUT if you are thinking about buying it online, now, without going into a shop as I did, then this really is the one for you. Ignore all the fantastic features, ignore the sensor robbed from its bigger expensive brother, ignore the 11 point focusing system, (or better the movable 11 point single focus) ignore the enormous crisp LCD, the bright well laid out top mounted display, the gorgeous crisp bright viewfinder, ignore all those well placed buttons. The simple fact is, if you are toying with this or the Canon equivalents (as most will be) then buy this for the glorious build quality, the weight and the way you wonder if the Nikon designers have the same sized hands as you (and anyone you pass this camera to) as its simply the best in build quality and ergonomics, the smaller Canons (350 & 400) just feel like plastic toys, and unless you have very small hands you'll find your last finger flailing around with no-where to go, whereas the bigger ones (20 & 30) are built like a brick outhouse, but sadly look and feel like a brick outhouse.

This is what it boils down to, on spec for £ they all run a photo-finish, on build and handling this ones has got them all well and truly licked.
